Choose a beacon
Goodnight Phone knows you’re in the bedroom when your iPhone hears a small Bluetooth beacon by your bed. Here’s what to get.
Recommended: Blue Charm BC-U1
About $19. A USB stick that plugs into any USB-A charger, so there’s no battery to run out and quietly end blocking. Goodnight Phone sets it up itself, with no other app: it gives the beacon an ID of its own and lets you make its range shorter or longer from the app.
No outlet by the bed: Blue Charm BC05
About $21. A small sealed puck on one CR2477 coin cell, rated about four years at the rate Goodnight Phone sets. The app sets it up the same way. When the battery dies, your phone counts as “not in the bedroom”, so blocking quietly stops until you replace it.
Already have a beacon?
Any iBeacon works. Enter its UUID in the app (it’s on the box or in the maker’s app), and adjust its range in the maker’s app. Lower transmit power, around −12 dBm or less, keeps the zone inside the bedroom.
No beacon yet?
A spare iPad or iPhone can stand in. Install Goodnight Phone on it, leave it open by the bed, and choose Use a spare iPad or iPhone under Bedroom beacon on your phone. Then stand at the bedroom door and tap Set boundary.
